Above it sits a shallow layer of imported topsoil. In the first couple of seasons the lawn looks great, since sod arrives fully grown. Then the roots reach the compaction layer, stop, and the lawn starts behaving like something much older and more tired than it is — thinning in summer heat, standing water in low spots, and moss where sun and drainage are both poor.</p> <p>Core aeration is the main tool. Done in fall on cool-season turf, repeatedly, over years, it opens channels that let water, air and roots move down into the profile instead of sitting on top of it.</p>
